This presentation by Ken Koons, Professor of History at Virginia Military Institute, will explore the history of manufacturing in the Shenandoah Valley, from the frontier era through the early Republic and late antebellum period. Grist mills, sawmills, iron furnaces, tanneries, and the wide array of goods and services provided by artisanal craftsmen of the Valley all contributed to the long-term vitality of the region, but are too often overlooked in favor of agriculture when discussing the history of the Valley.

The Frontier Culture Museum’s 2020 Lecture Series is supported by a grant from Virginia Humanities.
