The Richmond Folk Festival features more than thirty performing groups on seven live music stages with continuous music and dance performances, along with children’s activities, a folk arts marketplace, regional and ethnic foods, and more. The FREE three-day festival is expected to be one of the largest events in Virginia, drawing visitors from across the country. Our Virginia Folklife Program has been a producing partner since the Festival’s inception.

This year the Virginia Folklife area will will explore various costuming and adornment traditions brought to Virginia over generations by immigrants, including the intricate and delicate ceremonial ensembles from the region’s Cambodian masters, the deeply expressive handcrafted Buddhist t’sam ceremonial masks of Northern Virginia’s vibrant Mongolian community, and the truly spectacular, colorful, and labor-intensive Carnival costumes of the mid-Atlantic’s Caribbean community. These and other costuming arts will not be simply displayed but donned, with featured master crafters joined by a cadre of dancers, stilt walkers, contortionists, and revelers.
