Ela Project

Explored Landscapes of Afro-Virginia

With the support of the General Assembly African American Cultural Resources Task Force, American Evolution™ 2019 Commemoration, and Richard S. Reynolds Foundation, Virginia Humanities African American Programs is redesigning and relaunching its historic sites database in 2019 to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Africans in Virginia.

The Ela (pronounced “Ella”) Project is utilizing oral histories, Google 360 imaging, and GIS mapping to spotlight Virginia’s African American historical sites, promote local tourism and preservation, and support place-based learning in Virginia’s classrooms.
