Virginia Humanities’ African American Programs explores Virginia within the African diaspora and the history and cultures of Virginians of African descent. African American Programs partners across the organization and statewide to advance inclusive narratives through research, education, and digital and public programs.

Current statewide projects include the General Assembly African American cultural resources task force and the 2019 relaunch of the Virginia African American historic sites database.

African American Programs also proudly partners with the annual Afrikana Independent Film Festival, Virginia Festival of the Book, and Virginia Film Festival.
