VFH Board member Joanne Gabbin is a professor of English at James Madison University and founder and director of the Furious Flower Poetry Center.
Gabbin was invited to join the Board at the request of poet and former VFH Board member Nikki Giovanni.
She recently sat down with Elliot Majerczyk in our radio studio to talk about her work at the Furious Flower Poetry Center and what the humanities have to teach us.
The humanities teach us about the language we celebrate in and the language we cry in.
Our history as African Americans is rooted in slavery and the humanities help us understand how that came about and how we have progressed from a slave hold… to a point where there is the potential for justice and equality for all people.
[VFH] helps us to be in touch with our history, philosophy, ethics…and poetry.
