Luminaria Cville is hosting a public event on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, VA celebrating the music and culture from Veracruz Mexico.

There will be two workshops followed by a performance.

  • 3:00 pm: Workshop on zapateado, the percussive foot dance of the son jarocho
  • 4:00 pm: Workshop on son jarocho song form and rhythms. Interested participants should bring their jarana (or their guitar, mandolin or ukulele).
  • 7:00 pm: Performance of traditional son jarocho music and its modern adaptations and original sones.

There will be a reception after the event to talk with and ask questions of the artists.

Luminaria Cville is a place where family, culture & community coalesce, through music, performance and visual arts, sin fronteras. We seek to create, respectfully explore, educate and build artistic bridges between cultures.

This event is funded in part by a grant from Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.
